Spartan hockey team enjoy mixed success

The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks got goals from six different players and 24 saves from Dylan Langenbrunner in a 6-3 win over the Superior High School boys hockey team Friday night at the Pine Valley Arena in Cloquet.

Trevor Dalbec and Grant Sorensen gave Superior a 2-1 lead with first-period goals.

CEC took the lead for good with three goals in the second period, then made it 5-2 with Zach Conklin’s goal 9:28 into the third period.

Max Plunkett scored Superior’s third goal with 1:56 remaining and CEC’s Jedd Anich finished the scoring 44 seconds later.

Caden Welch had 28 saves for Superior and Dylan Langenbrunner stopped 24 shots for CEC.

Superior hosts New Richmond at 7 p.m. today, and plays at Duluth East Thursday and at Greenway Saturday. Both road games begin at 7:30 p.m.

Girls Hockey

The Spartans rallied past the St. Croix Valley Fusion for a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon at the Superior Ice Arena.

Addie and Sam Young led Superior’s charge with two goals apiece.

Addie also picked up an assist on one of Samantha’s goals, and Alee Milinkovich-Gray helped out on Sam’s first goal, which tied the game 2-2 with 7:55 left in the second quarter.

Autumn had 27 saves for the Spartans and Ellen Coggio topped 28 shots for the Fusion.

The Spartans host Hayward at 7 tonight and Western Wisconsin (River Falls) at 6 p.m. Thursday.
