Emma Peterson scored five goals and assisted on another to lead the Superior High School girls hockey team to a 9-3 victory over the Western Wisconsin Stars Monday night at the Superior Ice Arena.

The Spartans (5-2-1) also got two goals and an assist from Samantha Young and single goals from Sadey Laurvick and Jordyn Thompson. Laurvick also dished out three assists and Thompson had two.

Cassie Gravelle scored twice and Bailey Erickson once for the Stars, who play their home games in New Richmond.

Payton Michaud picked up the win in goal for Superior with 23 saves.

Catherin Magler had 25 saves for Western Wisconsin.

Also helping out for Superior were Alee Miklinkovich-Gray, Alyssa Kolanczyk and Amanda Hinaus with two assists apiece; and Devyn Moss with one assist.

SPARTAN SPIN: No penalties were called on Western Wisconsin, while three were called on Superior.

 

Culver’s Cup

Up next for Superior is the Culver’s Cup this weekend at Hartmeyer Arena in Madison. The Spartans open against Northland Pines at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Superior is ranked No. 10 in this week’s www.wiscosninprephockey.net state rankings. Northland Pines (6-2) is ranked No. 8 in the same poll.

Other first-round games are the Metro Lynx vs. the Point-Rapids Red Panthers, the Brookfield Glacker vs. the St. Croix Valley Fusion and University School of Milwaukee vs. the Badger Thunder.

On Sunday, the Spartans will play at 7:15 p.m. if they win and 5 p.m. if they lose. The tournament runs through Monday.
