The Superior High School baseball team lost 3-1 and 8-3 in its season-opening games Tuesday afternoon at Menomonie.
Superior had two hits in the opener, a double by Taavi Mattson and a single by Tyler Nystrom. Nystrom also scored Superior’s only run in the sixth inning.
Menomonie had six hits, one each by Terrin Vavra, Mitch Stai, AJ Naatz, Mitch Thomas, Alex Larson and Josh Draeger.

Mattson pitched the first five innings, allowing five hits with three strikeouts. Morgan Moen allowed a hit in the final inning.
Stai struck out six and walked two in six innings for the Mustangs.
Superior had nine hits in game two, including two singles and two RBIs by Peyton Flanders. Nystrom also tripled and Austin Arnovich, Austin Sears, Matt Strum, Erick Anderson, Justin Reinkall and Logan Griffith singled.
Thomas had two of Menomonie’s five hits and knocked in three runs. Nate Stanley also singled and had three RBIs.
Arnovich, Nystrom, Strum, Griffith, Tyler Lehikoinen, Moen and Reinkall pitched for Superior, combining to strike out two and walk six.
The Spartans’ game Thursday with Northwestern has been postponed. They are schedule to play at 4:30 p.m. at Hermantown.
