The Solon Springs girls basketball team won its home opener Friday against the Mellen Granite Diggers, 43-23.

Solon Springs took a 12-2 lead after the first quarter and led 19-12 at halftime. The Eagles maintained a 7-point lead through the third quarter and finished with a 14-1 performance in the fourth quarter to win by 20.

“The girls played a great game as a team,” said Brian Amys, Solon Springs head coach. “We got into some foul trouble early and had some young girls step up and give us some quality minutes.”

Kahley Kallberg led the Eagles with 17 points, and Phoenix Thomas added 12 points.

“It is great to see the team work as one; the passing and reading the floor is all coming together,” Amys said. “As a coach you always want to see teamwork. It’s going to be a great year.”

The Eagles are back in action today with a home game against Washburn.
