The Solon Springs boys basketball team avenged an early season loss to Ironwood with a strong second half Tuesday to win 70-48.

Ironwood took a 30-29 halftime lead after Ian Averitt scored nine points to lead the Red Devils and Griffen Revoyr added seven.

Jens Gehl had 10 first-half points for Solon Springs, and the junior scored 14 more in the second half as the Eagles outscored Ironwood 41-18. Solon Springs had balanced scoring in the half, with seven players earning points. The Eagles also went 12-of-18 at the free-throw line after making just 4-of-8 attempts in the first half. Zach Rajala, Caden Smith and Alex Hunter were all perfect from the line in the second half.

For the night, Rajala and Gehl led the Eagles with 11 and 24 points, respectively. Nick Zosel had nine points, Chase Latvala and Hunter added eight apiece, Smith had six points and Reid Lisson had four.

The Eagles play at Mellen today and then are off until Jan. 27 when they’ll host Bayfield.

Girls basketball

The Eagles dropped a close game at Mellen Monday, 42-37.

Morgan Ellias provided the majority of her team’s offense, finishing with 26 points for the Granite Diggers.

Morgan Anderson had 11 points for Solon Springs, and Taylor Blaylock and Nikki Orozco chipped in eight points apiece.

The Granite Diggers made 16 of their points for the night at the free-throw line, while the Eagles made only one.

Solon Springs played a nonconference game at Northwood Thursday, and the Eagles host Luck at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in another nonconference match. On Monday Solon Springs returns to conference action, hosting Bayfield (11-2, 7-1) at 7:15 p.m.
