Alex Smith, a 14-year-old from Solon Springs, took home the checkered flag Friday in the final race on the final night of weekly racing at AMSOIL Speedway in Superior, winning the 15-lap, 19-car Pure Stocks event for his first win in the classification.
Also earning wins ahead of championship week were Zach Wohlers of Kelly Lake in the Late Models, Ashland’s Kevin Eder in the Modifieds, Superior’s Scott Lawrence in the Super Stocks and Devan VanHouse of Silver Bay in the Midwest Modifieds. For VanHouse, Friday’s win was also his first at AMSOIL Speedway.

Lawrence’s second win of the season at the speedway gave him an 18-point lead over Shane Kisling. He also turned a lap of 18.447 seconds for the fastest of the event.
Wohlers led the entire 25-lap Late Model feature and set the fast time along the way with a lap of 17.069 seconds.
Smith took his first lead of the pure stock feature just before a caution flag came with two laps remaining.
After the restart things got ugly resulting in a red flag when Justin Weinberger, a rookie who has already a couple of feature wins this season, was squeezed into the front stretch wall and ended up barrel rolling down the front stretch a reported seven times. He was reported to not be injured and climbed out of the car quickly.
When racing resumed Smith was able to hold on for the win.
Championship week at the speedway begins tonight at the Head of the Lakes Fair with final points for Late Models and Modifieds. Final points will take place Friday for super stocks and Midwest Modifieds. Pure stocks will be in action both nights.
NOTES: Ninty-three cars were on hand Friday. … Dave Flynn turned in the fastest lap for Midwest Modifieds at 18.542 seconds. … Jody Bellefeuille, Jeff Klopstein, Michael Truscott, Dale Coddington and Matt Deragon won features Saturday at the ABC Raceway in Ashland.
