Lydia Delich tossed a five-inning three-hitter and drove in four runs with three hits to lead Eveleth-Gilbert to a 14-0 victory over visiting Two Harbors on Monday in the opening round of the Section 7AA high school softball playoffs.

Delich doubled and tripled to help the Golden Bears (12-9) score five runs in the third inning and eight in the fourth.

Eveleth-Gilbert will face Moose Lake-Willow River (17-3), which ousted Pine City 14-0 in five innings, in Thursday’s double-elimination format. Natalie Mikrot drove in three runs for the Rebels.

Other winners Monday included top-seeded Proctor, unbeaten Greenway and Virginia, which downed higher-seeded Mesabi East 13-2 in five innings.

  • The Section 7A tournament, led by subsection No. 1 seeds Cherry and Barnum, begins Tuesday. First-round games at host sites are elimination contests before double-elimination play kicks in Thursday at Braun Park in Cloquet.

Playoffs to start

Tuesday marks a wild day in the Section 7A and 7AA playoffs as 23 games are scheduled at 12 sites.

Esko (15-5) is the top seed in 7AA and opens with a 2 p.m. game against Rush City in Proctor.

In 7A, South Ridge (17-3) claimed the top seed and will face either Carlton or Barnum after receiving a first-round bye.

Double-elimination play begins Tuesday evening and then continues Thursday at Minnesota Duluth and Nashwauk in 7AA and at Proctor and Aurora in 7A.

Section 7AAA also begins Tuesday with only one Northland school, Grand Rapids, hosting a double-elimination game. The third-seeded Thunderhawks (13-7) open against Cloquet.
