Northwood/Solon Springs scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning and needed it as Grantsburg came back with a run in the bottom half of the inning before falling 8-7 in high school softball Thursday in Grantsburg, Wisconsin.

Zoey Vaara went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs to lead Northwood/Solon Springs (2-0) while also earning the pitching win. Muree Ahlberg added two hits and a run while Kyra Latvala had two runs and a hit.

Northwood/Solon Springs scored the winning run in the top of the seven inning after Ahlberg singled. She was bunted over to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Emme Golembiewski. She then scored on an RBI single from Izzy Golembiewski. The team then made several nice plays to hang onto the lead in bottom of seventh, with a gutsy effort pitching by Vaara.

“Great effort from this team,” coach Dale Rajala said. “It was a fun game to be a part of. We needed to see if we could match up with a great program like Grantsburg. We battled the whole game and showed the mental toughness we expected. Zoe Vaara played an amazing game. Very proud of her.”
