Spartan softball team improves to 16-1
The Superior High School softball team improved to 16-1 with a pair of wins this week.
The Spartans won 4-1 at Rice Lake on Monday, May 6, then defeated Cloquet 3-0 Tuesday, May 7, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
Mady Stariha was the complete-game winner in both games. She tossed a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts at Rice Lake, then picked up her fifth shutout of the season when she allowed five hits and struck out four against Cloquet.
Stariha helped her own cause against Cloquet by going 3-for-3, including a double and a run scored.
Hailee Melgeorge added an RBI double; McKenzie Lehto had RBI single; and Elise DeGraef, Kayleigh Miller and Madison Sislo had a single apiece.
Josie Steen yielded eight hits and three runs — two earned — over six innings for the Lumberjacks.
Dana Jones double and Keagan Anderson singled twice for Cloquet.
In the win at Rice Lake, DeGraef doubled twice and knocked in a run; Lehto had an RBI double; Natalee Sigfrids had an RBI; Miller, Stariha and Autumn Siers all doubled; and Ruby Moore singled.
Superior (4-0 Lake Superior Conference) plays at Duluth Marshall at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, and has three games in the Chippewa Falls Tournament Saturday, May 11.
SPARTAN SPIN: Stariha leads the Spartans with 24 hits and 12 doubles; Ruby Moore has a team-high 21 runs and 12 stolen bases; and Chesie McLauhlin leads with 20 RBIs and seven home runs.
