UWS stays alive at UMAC tourney
The University of Wisconsin-Superior softball team stayed alive at the UMAC Tournament with a 9-3 win over Minnesota Morris Thursday, May 2, in Mankato, Minn.
The Yellowjackets, who opened the tournament with and 11-0 loss in five innings to St. Scholastica, will now play Bethany Lutheran at 2 p.m. Friday, May 3. The winner will play the loser of the St. Scholastica-Northwestern game, which is at noon Friday.
The Saints (23-14) built a 5-0 lead and then put the game out of reach with six runs in the top of the fifth inning.
UWS (17-18) had four hits, two by Bailey Kinnunen and one each by Tiffany Kirk and Ashley Taipale.
Taipale took the loss, allowing five runs (4 earned) on six hits and two walks. She also struck out three and hit a batter.
In their win over the Vikings, the Yellowjackets pounded out 19 hits, with Kirk, Alayna Tulip, Gabby Gidley and Armstrong all having three.
Davriana Horvath, Taipale and Bailey Kinnunen added two hits each and Gidley and Bailey Armstrong each drove in three runs.
Taipale recovered on the mound and picked up the complete-game win and even her record at 8-8. She allowed three runs (two earned) on 11 hits. She struck out three.
The tournament runs through Saturday, with the winner receiving the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III tournament.
‘JACKET JOTTINGS: The Saints lead the all-time series with UWS 28-26. … The Yellowjackets swept a doubleheader from the Saints back in early April for the first time since 2002 ... The only postseason meeting, prior to Thursday, took place in 2016 where the Yellowjackets won 2-of-3 to capture the UMAC Tournament title.
