Spartans stay hot on cold night
Even temperatures in the mid-20s could cool off the Superior High School softball team as it swept a non-conference doubleheader from Eau Claire North Tuesday, April 30, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
The Spartans improved to 9-1 on the season as they easily won the opener 10-0, but needed a late-inning rally to win the second game 11-5.
The Spartans found themselves trailing 4-1 after two innings in game two.
Ruby Moore led off the game a single, stole second and eventually scored on Mady Stariha's sac fly, giving Superior an early 1-0 lead. ECN got off to a good start against Superior starting pitcher Chesie McLaughlin, scoring three runs in the first inning and one in the second.
After scoreless third and fourth innings, Superior tied things up at 4-4 in the fifth inning, thanks to two errors, a wild pitch and Elise DeGraef's RBI single.
The Spartans then sent 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run sixth inning, that included seven singles, two walks and a sac fly.
Stariha, who took over for McLaughlin with two outs in the second inning, allowed one run on four hits, while striking out three and walking three to pick up the win.
The Spartans, who outhit the Huskies 16-7, got three hits and an RBI from Moore and Autumn Siers; two hits and two RBIs from Niya Wilson; two hits and one RBI from Stariha, Kayleigh Miller and DeGraef; and a double and two RBIs from McKenzie Lehto.
ECN got a double and RBI from Annika Olson, and two hits an RBI from MacKenzie Gilbert.
Stariah tossed one-hitter in the opener with five strikeouts and a walk. The senior allowed Taylor Wolder's one-out single in the first inning then retired 11 of the next 12 batters.
On offense, McLaughlin was 3-for-3 with a first-inning two-run homer, a two-run double in the second inning and a single in the fourth. Siers added a double and RBI single; DeGraef hit a two-run double and an RBI groundout; Stariha and Lyvia Olson hits RBI doubles; and Miller tripled.
Cienna Haller took the loss for the Huskies, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits and a walk. Taylor Wolder singled in the first inning for ECN.
The Spartans, who hosted Menomonie for two games Thursday, May 2, plays at Wausau West at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, and D.C. Everest at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 4.
Superior returns home to host Cloquet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7.
