Tiger girls sweep Cumberland

The Northwestern High School softball team swept a doubleheader from the Cumberland Beavers by scores of 11-1 in six innings and 5-2 Tuesday, April 30, at the Brule softball fields.

The Tigers improved to 10-1 overall and 7-1 in the Heart O’ North Conference with the wins, while the Beavers fall to 5-7 and 1-3.

Allison Luoma was the winning pitcher in the opener, allowing six hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.

Karsyn Jones led the Tigers at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two-run single.

Brooke Ogren also had a two-run single; Kennedy Nelson had two hits and an RBI; Jayda Klobucher and Alyssa Little both had a hit and RBI; and Tayva Plasch doubled.

Lauren Green suffered the loss, allowing 11 hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks.

Cumberland’s run came on Alleah Anderson’s fourth-inning single. Ellie Rieper was also 3-for-3 and Payton Nyhus 2-for-3.

Nelson picked up the win in game two, allowing one earned run on 10 hits with five strikeouts. Green took the loss, allowing nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Mac Correll led the Tigers on offense with an RBI double and two singles. Nelson and Klobucher added RBI doubles; Plach had two hits; and Ogren had an RBI single.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Correll and Nelson.

Northwestern’s remaining three runs came in the seventh thanks to an error, an RBI single by Ogren and an RBI double by Klobucher.

Green doubled and scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth and Rieper hit an RBI double in the seventh to account for Cumberland’s runs.

The Tigers play at Hayward at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 2, and then will play three games in the Poynette Tournament this weekend.
