UWS softball picked to finish 4th in UMAC

The University of Wisconsin-Superior softball team was picked to finish fourth this spring in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.

The Yellowjackets, who placed fourth last season, is loaded with returning talent in all-UMAC honorees Ciarra Stavang, Saige Patrick and Katie White. All three are seniors.

A year ago Stavang, a three-time UMAC player, averaged a.485 slugging percentage, and led the team in doubles with 10.

White will once again manage the duties at first base. Last year she held a .327 batting average, was UMAC Honorable Mention, and was All-UMAC Defensive Team.

Patrick will also make a return to the outfield. Last season she was second in the UMAC in batting average with .454 with 22 hits and a .454 OBP.

Over the last decade, the College of St. Scholastica has been tabbed by coaches to win its 10th straight UMAC championship.

The Saints pulled in 61 points and six first-place votes from the coaches, while three other squads appeared first on one ballot. Last season’s co-runner-ups Crown College and the University of Northwestern came in second (53 points) and third (51 points), respectively, with each getting a first-place nod. The 2016 UMAC postseason champion UWS also picked up a first-place vote and sits fourth with 47 points.

The Yellowjackets, under the guidance of Roger Plachta for the past 17 seasons, were 16-17 overall last year and 9-7 in the UMAC. They kick off their season Feb. 24 in the Finlandia Dome Classic in Marquette, Mich.

’JACKET JOTTINGS: UWS has the distinction of winning both UMAC and WIAC Tournament Championships.
