Scott Wilson's penalty kick goal in the 65th minute was all the University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s soccer team needed in a 1-0 win over St. John's University on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Haws Field in Collegeville, Minn.
Wilson, a junior defender and transfer from NCAA Division II Gannon, beat Johnnies' goalkeeper Payton Spencer for his first goal at UWS.
UWS goalkeeper Ulrik Lager made 10 saves, including an SJU penalty by Leighton Lommel, to preserve his first shutout of the season.
UWS (13-2-2) closes the regular season Saturday, Nov. 2, at Bethel at 1 p.m. The game was originally scheduled Sept. 11.
The loss dropped St. John's to 8-7.
UWS made quick work of North Central on Saturday, Oct. 26, winning 25-12, 25-14, 25-12.
With the win, the Yellowjackets (13-16, 5-3 UMAC) wrapped up the No. 4 seed for the upcoming UMAC tournament.
The Yellowjackets won in just 55 minutes and will host an opponent to be determined in the quarterfinals on Monday, Nov. 4, at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
For UWS, Gina Baertsch had six kills and Hannah Goggleye and Elise Ertl both had five kills. Megan Holz and Baertsch both had 10 set assists and Yanna Carrera had 14 digs.
UWS closes the regular season at the Warrior Invitational at Wisconsin Lutheran on Friday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 2. The 'Jackets face Maranatha Baptist at 3 p.m. and Beloit at 7 p.m. on the first day of the event.
UWS opens its season by hosting Concordia (Wis.) at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, and 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Wessman Arena.
