University of Wisconsin-Superior senior James Bruce and sophomore Blake Perry both scored hat tricks as the Yellowjackets opened Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play with a 12-1 win over Northland on Sunday, Sept. 29, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

Bruce added two assists for UWS (5-2-2, 1-0 UMAC).

Yellowjacket seniors Danny Kearns, Eric Watson, Jake Myran and Gutavo Barbieri, junior Blake Doyea and sophomore Abel Vaudo also scored for UWS. The Yellowjackets outshot the LumberJacks 36-1, including 22-1 in shots on goal.

UWS is back in action at St. Scholastica on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 3:30 p.m.

Women’s soccer

Sophomore Annah Schussman scored twice, including the game-winning goal in double overtime, as UWS defeated Northland 2-1 at home Sunday.

As time was winding down, senior Kaylee Johnson got a step on her defender on flank and found Schussman, who took one stride and fired a left-footed shot past Northland goalkeeper Megan Jordan for the win.

Schussman's first goal was assisted by vy Grochowski.

Ashley Hammes scored Northland’s first goal of the season in the 12th minute.

The win for UWS (2-5-2, 1-0) marked the first time since 2015 it opened its conference schedule with a victory. The loss dropped the LumberJills to 0-7.

The Yellowjackets host UW-Stout at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Volleyball

UWS swept Martin Luther College 25-14, 25-20, 25-22 in UMAC action Saturday, Sept. 28, at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

Brylee Colligan led UWS (8-9, 2-0) with 13 kills and 15 digs.

UWS later lost 21-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-22 to Bethel College. Cami Sletta and Lexi Oeltjen led the Yellowjackets with 12 kills apiece and Megan Holz registered 30 digs.
