James Bruce scored two goals to lead the University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s soccer team to a 3-1 non-conference win over Macalester on Wednesday, Sept. 4, in St. Paul.
With the score tied 1-1, Yellowjacket junior midfielder Miguel Ocampo rocketed a penalty into the top left corner in the 77th minute to break a 1-1 tie.
Bruce, the Yellowjackets' leading goal-scorer last season, scored in the 21st and 82nd minutes as UWS improved to 3-0 and upped its regular-season unbeaten streak to 22 games.
Dalton VonKaenel made five saves in the match — all in the second half. He also stopped a second penalty kick in the 84th minute on Theo Nsereko to preserve the two-goal advantage.
UWS plays at Augsburg at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7.
UWS had three athletes honored by the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
The men’s soccer team had two players honored. Senior forward Eric Watson was named Offensive Player of the Week, and VonKanenel was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Watson scored a goal in each of the Yellowjackets' two wins over Austin and Dallas over the weekend in Texas. He picked up the game-winning goal against Austin, helping UWS to a 4-0 victory. Watson also scored the third goal in the 83rd minute at Dallas.
A two-year team captain, Watson has 30 goals and 14 assists for 74 points in 59 career matches. He is just seven from tying Jon Bucklew's school record.
VonKaenel earned his sixth career shutout in a 4-0 season-opening victory over Austin on Friday, Aug. 30, in Sherman, Texas. VonKaenel made three saves in the win.
He is 25-8-2 in 39 career matches with a 1.21 goals-against average and .731 save percentage.
UWS (2-0) hosted Macalester on Aug. 5.
Also honored was freshman Cassy Teff, a setter/outside hitter on the volleyball team, who was named Setter of the Week.
Teff recorded a triple-double and two double-doubles, helping the Yellowjackets to a 1-3 weekend at the Sugar Loaf Classic. She averaged 5.06 assists, 2.94 digs and 2.18 kills per set.
UWS, which played at St. Olaf on Tuesday, Sept. 3, will host the 2019 Stinger Classic this weekend.

The UWS men, along with the St. Scholastica women, captured the season-opening Twin Ports Collegiate title Saturday, Aug. 31, at Nemadji Golf Course.
UWS fired a 5-over 289 in the final round to defeat the St. Mary’s Cardinals by five strokes.
Junior Sam Albrecht was second overall behind St. Mary’s Bryce Galewski, who blistered the 6,319-yard course with a 65 to run away with medalist honors.
St. Scholastica finished third, 13 strokes behind St. Mary’s.
The Saint women won its fourth straight Twin Ports title by after UW-Eau Claire by seven strokes as CSS junior Hannah Johnson shattered a program-record with a 2-over-par 73 to earn medalist honors with a 36-hole total of 8-over 151.
St. Olaf swept UWS 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-12) Tuesday, Sept. 3, in Northfield, Minn.
The Oles (4-1) were led by Lauren Rewers' 13 kills and Emily Jarnigan's match-high 21 digs.
Cassy Teffled the Yellowjackets (1-3) with five kills, 12 assists and seven digs. Cami Sletta had eight kills and Brylee Colligan had five kills.
The Yellowjackets will host the Subway Stinger Classic Sept. 6-7 at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
Also competing will be St. Scholastica, Finlandia, Nebraska Wesleyan and Crown College.
