Claire Smith’s sixth-round penalty kick gave the University of Wisconsin-Superior a 5-4 shootout victory over Minnesota Morris in a  UMAC tournament play-in game Monday, Oct. 30, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

The Cougars had one last chance to extend the shootout, but a save  by keeper Madison Gutenkunst sent the Yellowjackets (7-10-3) to semifinals against top-seeded St. Scholastica at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Saints Field.

After a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, UWS and Morris (6-10-1) headed to a shootout.

Sarah Fjeran, Emily Roe, Erin Schoborg, Mackenzie Dahlin and Smith all scored in the shootout for the Yellowjackets and Gutenkunst, the UMAC Defensive Player of the Week, earned the nine-save shutout for the Yellowjackets, who haven’t given up a goal in the last 493 minutes and 27 seconds.

Bailey Tschida finished with four saves for Morris.

Wednesday’s other semifinal game is No. 3 Northland College at No. 2 Northwestern. The championship game is Saturday at a time to be determined.

’JACKET JOTTINGS: The Saints lead the all-time series with UWS 15-0. ... The Saints and Yellowjackets will be playing in the postseason for the first time. ... The Saints have allowed only three goals all-time against the Yellowjackets. ... Gutekunst, a freshman from Mound, Minn., had two shutouts on 12 saves in two games last week. She now has four straight shutouts and six in the last eight games.
