The Superior High School track team opened its season at the Proctor meet, which was held Friday at Minnesota Duluth. Duluth Marshall, Two Harbors and Eveleth Gilbert were there also competing with no scores kept in the time trial meet.
One highlights for the Spartan boys was the foursome of Alex Dzikionski, Colton Lorenz, Aaron Wakefield and Anthony Valentine finishing first in the 4x176 relay.
The 4x800 relay team of Addison Schwartz, Mckenzie Schwartz, Joe Tenney and Jake Jacques also finished third; Dzikionski was second and Blake Sharpe third in the 55; Brian Wines was third in the 1,600; and the 4x400 relay of Evan Walpole, Robert McClarey, Jake Noonan and Wines finished second.
"The 4x1 lap relay was our fastest ever at this track," said SHS coach Kris Leopold. " They ran quicker than Joe Welch, Sean Galligher, Tony Moselle and Bert Smith did way back.
"Brian Wines is the real deal. He is mentally tough and a born winner. I was lucky to teach him in elementary phy-ed. Blake Sharpe is a rookie with a second gear. He is calm and cool and still can put the hammer down."

For the SHS girls, Raya Kosey finished first in the 55, 400 and long jump. Lauren Magnuson won the 200 and Tay Boykin won the triple jump.
"Raya looks to be in amazing form once again and Magnusen, a freshman, is right next to her though," Leopold said. "They both want to win, so it should be an exciting year.
"Lauren's 200 time is an outstanding indoor time. Times in the 27's are tough to get indoors. Giselle Sziron is another freshman who is not far behind. If they would have all been in the same heat, it would have been a show.
"Freshman Elizabeth Kolanczyk will be also be an outstanding hurdler for us. Taking fifth place in this meet is a great accomplishment and she's only been hurdling for a couple weeks."
Rachel Dixon also caught Leopold's attention in the mile.
"She wants to be the best, and that speaks of her work ethic. She gives it all every day at practice," Leopold said.
Besides winning the triple jump, Boykin helped Raya in the long jump with a second.
"Danielle Magdzas will also have a great year in the high jump," Leopold said. "She hung in right until the end."
