SHS softball team suffers first loss

The Superior High School softball team tasted defeat for the first time this season with a 2-1 loss to the Esko Eskomos Saturday morning at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

The Superior High School softball team tasted defeat for the first time this season with a 2-1 loss to the Esko Eskomos Saturday morning at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

The Spartans, who entered the game undefeated at 7-0, were held hitless through six innings by Esko pitcher Emilee Wilson.

Trailing 2-0, Mady Stariha led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single, moved to second on Olivia Hunker’s ground out and scored on Chesie McLaughlin’s double.

Wilson struck out the next two batters to preserve the win for the Eskomos (6-0).

Wilson finished with eight strikeouts and three walks.

Stariha suffered the loss for Superior, allowing five hits with nine strikeouts and two walks.

Esko took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Davriana Horvath led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Jenna Zdebski’s single.

Zdebski also scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the seventh when she led off with a double, moved to third on Freja Johnson’s sacrifice and scored on Kaitlyn Bergerson’s infield single.

The Spartans have seven games scheduled this week, starting with a doubleheader Tuesday at Eau Claire North.

Superior is also at Duluth East Thursday and hosts Hudson Friday before playing three games in the Becker (Minn.) Tournament Saturday.
