The Superior High School girls basketball team clinched the Lake Superior Conference championship with a 65-51 win over the Ashland Oredockers Friday night at Ashland.
"I am extremely proud of how well my girls played," SHS coach Phil Roe said. "I got great focus and energy from all 11 team members on the court and on the bench.
"We are all very proud and excited to be LSC champs. Ashland came with everything they had and played us very tough, but my girls continued to give 100 percent up until the final buzzer."
The Spartans, who wrap up their regular season with records of 15-6 overall and 8-0 in the LSC, got 19 and 15 points, respectively from Jessica Lindstrom and Hailey Kontny. Ally Gotelaere added nine points and Kallyn Lagro chipped in with eight.
Kaela Huber had 15 points and Briana Tody 13 for Ashland (14-7, 5-2).

"It was a great game with a big crowd against a good program which will only help us getting ready for tournament play," Roe said. "Two major factors in the win -- our defensive pressure, which forced Ashland into committing 15 turnovers; and my bench, which stepped up and scored 21 points.
"This was a total team win."
The Spartans host Wausau West in a WIAA regional final at 7 p.m. Friday in the SHS gym.

Superior High School's Jessica Lindstrom, Hailey Kontny and Raya Kosey were named to the Lake Superior Conference All-Conference Girls Basketball team for the 2011-12 season.
Lindstrom and Kontny, both sophomores, were first-team selections, while Kosey, a senior, was a second-team pick.
