SHS girls second, boys sixth at conference meet

The Superior High School girls track team finished second and the boys were sixth at Tuesday's Lake Superior Conference Track and Field Championships at Cloquet.

The Superior High School girls track team finished second and the boys were sixth at Tuesday's Lake Superior Conference Track and Field Championships at Cloquet.

Hermantown won the girls team title while Ashland claimed the boys championship.

The Spartan girls won seven events. Raya Kosey returned from an injury to win the 200, 400 and long jump.

"Raya had a huge day scoring 38 points individually," SHS coach Phil Roe said. "This is the first meet Raya has run in over a month and she has really had to persevere both mentally and physically through this whole thing. I was really happy to see her become all-conference in all four of her events, that is truly amazing."

Also for Superior, Leah Holmes won the 1,600 and 3,200; Giselle Sziron won the 300 hurdles; Carissa Welch won the pole vault; and Lauren Magnuson ran the fastest 100.

"Leah got all-conference honors in the 400, 1,600 and 3,200," Roe said. "She had a tough schedule running those three grueling races. Leah hadn't run the open 400 or two mile all year, but in order for our team to compete at conference she had to step up and run some events to help the team. Like a true captain Leah stepped up to the challenge and persevered."

The SHS girls also finished second in five other events (100, 200, 400, 800 and triple jump).

"I'm really proud of this girls team, it's the best team this school has seen talent-wise," Roe said. "Even though we didn't win conference I told my girls that there is nothing to hang your heads about they did a great job and they will be well prepared for regional/sectional competition next week.

"In my seven years of coaching track I have never had a team score more than 180 points and not win the meet. Hats off to Hermantown, it has a great track program in which seventh through 12th graders all stepped up. It was a battle until the end."

The lone winner for the Spartan boys was Carter Anderson, who finished first in the 300 hurdles. He also placed second in the 110 hurdles.

"Carter really stepped up big," Roe said. "To place so high in conference in the hurdles is a rarity and it speaks volumes about Carter's work ethic. He has been working extremely hard on the track and in the weight room and it all came together in the conference meet. It's fun watching him run with so much confidence. Chad Postal has done a great job coaching him this season."

The Spartans are back in action with the WIAA regional meet at 3:30 p.m. Monday at New Richmond. The top four finishers in each event will advance to the sectional meet at 4 p.m. Thursday in Rice Lake.

Emily LeSage set a personal record in the triple jump by four feet to get second place, and Tay Boykin also set a personal record to take third. ... Welch won her second straight pole vault title. ... Holly Bayless was third in the pole vault and sixth in the high jump. ... Natalie Kintop ran a great 800, placing second and making all-conference. She also placed in the 4x400 relay and triple jump. .. Caleb Dushkin was third in the pole vault and Colton Lorenz was fourth. ... Lorenz was also third in the long jump. "He's been a great captain for us this year," Roe said. "He works very hard in everything he has done and he was had to battle through an ankle injury suffered during basketball season so it was great to see him have that success in that environment. This is his first year pole vaulting and he got two feet better in one meet."
