Reds get past the Cubs

The Superior Reds scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning then held on for a10-9 win over the West Duluth Cubs Thursday evening at Wade Stadium.

The Superior Reds scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning then held on for a10-9 win over the West Duluth Cubs Thursday evening at Wade Stadium.

The Reds led 4-0 after two innings, trailed 6-4 after four and tied it up at 6-6 with two runs in the seventh.

Michael LaJoie was winning pitcher, allowing five hits with four strikeouts and four walks over 7.2 innings. Only five of the runs he allowed were earned.

Brandon Wing allowed two hits before getting the final out and picking up the save.

The Reds outhit the Cubs 12-7, led by Hunter Gustafson’s double, single and two RBIs.

Also for Superior, Gunner Johnson and Dominic D’Auria both doubled and knocked in two runs; Derek Fender was 3-for-4 with an RBI; LaJoie had two hits and an RBI; Trenton Wols had two hits; and Conner Fonger singled.

The Reds will take a 17-7 into this weekend’s Ely Tournament.

Superior opened at 11 a.m. today against Virginia. The pool winners will play in the title game at 3:45 p.m. Sunday.
