Superior’s Mahlea Waters had 20 kills and 12 digs over five matches at the "Battle of the Bay" tournament Sept. 10 in Ashland.

The Spartans didn’t drop a set in dispatching Ironwood, Mellen and Northern Pines on their way to the championship game against Ashland. The Oredockers won 25-15, 23-25, 15-10, but several Spartans, in addition to Waters, had big days.

Carlie Lohman finished with 52 set assists and 22 digs, while Khloe Zentkowski finished with 12 kills and 10 blocks. Sophie Linden joined Zentkowski with 10 blocks on the day.

In addition, the Spartan junior varsity squad “dominated” their tournament, according to coach Brenda Pluntz, going 3-0 on the day and taking the title home to Superior.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
