SUPERIOR — Superior catcher Emma Raye was selected as the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association's Division 1 player of the year in awards released this week.
Raye, a junior, played a key role in leading the Spartans to the state tournament, where Superior routed Cedarburg and 2021 player of the year Paytn Monticelli in the quarterfinals before bowing out in the semifinals to eventual runaway champion Kaukauna. The tournament took place at the University of Wisconsin's Goodman Diamond in Madison, where Raye expects to play collegiately after committing to the Badgers earlier in the school year.
According to season statistics compiled at wissports.com, Raye hit .500 (40-for-80) for the season in 22 games. She hit six of Superior's 10 home runs for the season, had three triples and five doubles and led the team in RBIs (19) and stolen bases (14).
Raye, who was also named to the all-state first team for the second consecutive year, also played a dynamic defensive game, picking several runners off the bases in support of primary pitcher Haley Zembo.
Zembo, who posted an ERA of 0.73 with 144 strikeouts in 18 appearances, was named to the Division 1 all-state second team.
