Prep report: Spartans softball sinks Hudson

SUPERIOR — Haley Zembo racked up 10 strikeouts as Superior defeated Hudson 4-1 in non-conference softball on Friday, May 6 at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

Alayna DeGraef's RBI single broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning, and was followed by a two-run homer in the fifth from Ari Robillard.

Emma Raye and Melania Luostari had a single and a double apiece for the Spartans, while Avery Visger tripled.

Zembo allowed just one unearned run on two hits and walked two.

Hermantown 1, North Branch 0

Natalie Vitek planked the Vikings on four hits and had two of her own, including the game-winning RBI as the Hawks won at home.

Esko 9, Mesabi East 0

Amber Carlblom tossed a three-hitter as the Eskomos rolled past the Giants.

Avery Kuklinski, Bailey Plante and Raegan Olson had two hits apiece for Esko, which scored six times in the fifth inning.

BASEBALL

Superior 13, Duluth Denfeld 6

Hayden Smith went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs for the Spartans at Wade Stadium, while Carter Kalin had a double, a triple and three more RBIs.

Northwestern 12, Cameron 0

Northwestern 15, Cameron 1

Northwestern scored seven times in the first inning of Game 1 and imposed its will the rest of the way.

Brayden Holsclaw had four hits in game one, while Jase Nelson had two hits including a lead-off homer, and Luke Sedin a pair of doubles.

Grady Gustafson pitched a five-inning two-hit shutout.

In Game 2, Holsclaw and Sedin had two hits apiece and Tyler Nelson pitched three hitless innings while the Tigers built a big lead.

Northwood/Solon Springs 10, Birchwood/Winter 0

Abe Ahlberg threw a five-inning no-hitter in which 14 of the 15 outs he recorded were strikeouts. All nine Eagles in the lineup had at least one hit: Ahlberg had a pair of doubles and drove in three.
