SUPERIOR — The Spartans' Brynn Kimmes scored a goal midway through the second half Monday, but Washburn/Bayfield’s Maddie Ludwig scored with 45 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Castle Guards to a 2-1 win.
After a scoreless first half, Washburn/Bayfield’s Olivia Saltero put a shot past Lexie Lohman off a free kick early in the second half to give the Castle Guards the lead.

Kimmes scored the equalizer about seven minutes later, but it was all for naught when Ludwig found the back of the net just before time expired.
Superior (0-3) is a very young team with seven freshmen and five sophomores on the roster his year, but coach Len Albrecht said his team is still learning and improving at this early stage of the season.
“They’re starting to pass the ball better,” Albrecht said. “The ball movement, the shape is getting better. It’s just the third game and we’re getting them to start understanding our process and how we want things done.”
