Prep report: Cloquet edges Superior tennis

Cloquet’s Sam Bailey was the only singles player to win, but the Lumberjacks swept all three doubles matches to take a 4-3 Lake Superior Conference boys tennis win at Superior Tuesday.

Bailey topped Jordan Hoffman 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 3 singles spot, while Superior’s Brodie Raygor topped Logan Beck 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot and Diedrick Nikoi beat Tyler Leppi 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.

The Spartans’ Dylan Urbaniak edged T.J. Sabyan 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 in the only three-set match of the day.

Cloquet’s Ethan Doty and Max Sundquist didn’t lose a game in their No. 2 doubles match, with Jonah Bryant-Nikko and Ethan Lavan beating Superior’s Allen Nelson and Vinnie Thiesen 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot.

Baseball

Proctor 2, Superior 1

Proctor’s A.J. Reyelts hit an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Rails a 2-1 home win over Superior.

Superior’s George Hansen tied the game in the top of the seventh inning on an infield hit with the bases loaded.

Ryan Schubitzke pitched one inning and allowed one run on three hits to get the win for Proctor.

Duluth Marshall 3, Duluth Denfeld 0

Duluth Marshall’s Owen Marsolek allowed three hits and struck out 10 batters over seven innings in a 3-0 win over Duluth Denfeld.

Carter Boos went 1-for-3 and had two RBIs for the Hilltoppers.

Dane Dzuck allowed two runs and three hits while striking out three for the Hunters. Dzuck also had a double for Denfeld.

Ashland 2, Northwestern 1

Marcus Kruzan struck out 14 Northwestern batters in seven innings for the Oredockers to outduel three Tigers pitchers who combined to allow only four hits.

Brandon Holsclaw had a pair of hits for Northwestern.

Softball

Esko 13, Virginia 6

Esko’s Amber Carlblom drove in four runs on three hits to lead the Eskomos to a 13-6 win over Virginia.

Esko scored eight in the third inning when Carlblom tripled and drive in three runs. Mikayli Marciulionis, Maya Emanuel and Avery Kuklinski all drove in runs in the inning for the Eskomos.

Marciulionis allowed six runs over three two-third innings and struck out two batters in the win.
