Prep report: Solon Springs’ Kastern scores 29 in rout of South Shore

SOLON SPRINGS — Solon Springs’ Isaiah Kastern scored 29 points — 21 in the first half — to lift the Eagles to a 79-49 win vs. South Shore Tuesday.

Kastern’s first-half outburst and a strong defensive effort allowed Solon Springs to open up a 40-19 halftime lead and cruise to the 30-point victory.

“I was extremely proud of our energy tonight,” coach Marcus Besonen said in an email. “We were able to execute our game plan about as well as I can expect against such a quality opponent. We had good balance offensively outside of Isaiah’s big night, and everyone contributed on both ends of the floor.”
Abe Ahlberg and Owen Smith each scored nine second-half points while Cardinal defenders worked to limit Kastern’s impact. Ahlberg finished with 11, while Smith and Dylan Taggart each scored nine.
Koy Nelson scored 15 points to lead South Shore and Carter Lulich had 13.

Floodwood 52, Cook County 48

Floodwood's Jan Caceres and Justin Spindler each scored 14 points in the Polar Bears' win over Cook County Tuesday in Grand Marais.

Cook County's Jacob Door led all scorers with 15 points and Derek Smith had 14 for the Vikings.

Northwestern 84, Hayward 33

Northwestern's Cole Lahti scored 26 points and Monte Mayberry had 20 in the Tigers 84-33 rout of Hayward.

Northwestern opened up a 43-20 lead at halftime and the Tigers defense allowed just 13 second half points in the blowout.

In addition, C.J. Thompson scored 13 points and hit three 3-pointers in his second game back from a foot injury that kept him out of the lineup for nearly seven weeks.

Henry Schmitt scored 10 points to lead Hayward.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Floodwood 37, Cook County 31

Alice Irvine scored 15 points for Floodwood in a 37-31 win at Cook County Tuesday.

The Vikings led by four at halftime, but scored just six points in a second half that saw just 22 points combined.

Kamryn Johnson and Katie Peck each scored 10 for Cook County.

BOYS SWIMMING

Mesabi East 75, Proctor 50

Mesabi East swimmers won all but three events in a 75-50 team win over Proctor Tuesday.

The Giants' Carter Steele won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 2.52 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 1:05.28 and was a member of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Garek Plinski won the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.42 and Aiden Gallagher won the 100 backstroke in 1:14.72 for Proctor.
