Northwood/Solon Springs holds on for win; stays unbeaten
Kyra Latvala had two hits and two runs and Zoey Vaara had two hits and two RBIs as Northwood/Solon Springs built a big lead and then held on to remain unbeaten by defeating Flambeau 10-9 Tuesday, May 26, in Solon Springs.
NSS (13-0) led 7-2 through three innings before Flambeau came back with two runs in the fourth and four in the sixth as the game came down to the wire. The teams combined for more runs (19) than hits (16) but also had nine errors. Zoey Vaara went the distance to get the pitching win, with only two of Flambeau’s nine runs being earned.
“Flambeau came to play with a great attitude and never gave up even when we were up early,” NSS coach Dale Rajala said. “We let some mistakes carry over into the later innings and it almost cost us the game. Muree Ahlberg and Kayla Schultz, our seniors, really helped pull us through with some big plays and hits when we needed them. Zoey Vaara also made some big pitches at the end of the game.”
