Prep softball: Schultz powers Northwood/Solon Springs to victory in season opener

Vaara doesn't allow a hit in three-inning victory.

Senior shortstop Kayla Schultz was 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs and five RBIs to lead Northwood/Solon Springs to a 15-0 three-inning victory over Bruce in their high school softball season opener Tuesday, April 17, in Solon Springs.

Emme Golombiewski (two hits, two runs, two RBIs), Muree Ahlberg (two hits, including a double, two runs, RBI) and Maddelyn Swanson (double, two runs, two RBIs) also had strong offensive games. Pitcher Zoey Vaara only faced 10 batters and didn’t allow a hit while striking out seven.

Northwood/Solon Springs had 10 hits and took advantage of four Bruce errors.

“Great start to our season,” coach Dale Rajala said. “There is a lot of talent on this team. We’re looking to be very competitive this year. We just need to keep working hard and improving every day.”
