Northwood/Solon Springs overcomes slow start
Kaden Corlett and Colby Latvala combined on a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts to lead Northwood/Solon Springs to a 12-0 Lakeland-East road victory at Cornell/Lake Holcombe.
“Kaden and Colby both threw well tonight,” coach Nate Ahlberg said. “Kaden had difficulty locating pitches early but was able to fix his mechanics and finish with seve strikeouts. Colby struck out the side in both the innings he pitched.”
NSS didn’t start well offensively, not getting on base until Braydon Larson’s single with one out in the third, but then exploded for nine runs in the fourth, taking advantage of five walks and five hits as both Drake Debeir and Abe Ahlberg had two-run doubles.
“We talk a lot about serving and loving others on and off the field,” Ahlberg said. “Braydon Larson exhibited that perfectly tonight. Braydon is our starting left fielder and does great defensively, but we often DH for him. He got to bat tonight and came through with a hit and two runs. But in the fifth, he asked if his brother Brandt could take his place and lead off that inning. Brandt has played very little for us this year, but Braydon gave up one of his few at bats to get his brother into the game. Brandt responded by lining a 3-2 pitch into center for his first varsity hit. I’m very proud of both Larson brothers.”
Northwood/Solon Springs (13-3 overall, 11-0 Lakeland-East) hosts Prairie Farm Thursday, June 3, and Clayton/Turtle Lake Friday, June 4, with both games in Minong.
