Prep report: CEC girls down Pine City; East boys get first win

The Greyhounds got in the win column for the first time after a season-opening eight-game losing streak.

Tenley Stewart and Bella Harriman each netted a pair of goals for Cloquet-Esko-Carlton in a 5-1 win over Pine City on Thursday, Dec. 23 at Northwoods Credit Union Arena.

The victory pushes the Lumberjacks to 7-5-1 on the season.

BOYS HOCKEY

Duluth East 6, Brainerd 1

The Greyhounds ended an eight-game losing streak and got their first win under coach Steve Pitoscia, scoring four goals in the second period to break the game open at Brainerd.

Cole Christian had a goal and three assists for the Greyhounds, who outshot the Warriors 45-14.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Superior 55, Duluth East 37

The Spartans held an opponent to 37 points for the third time this season, matching their season-best and getting a road win at East.

Emma Raye scored 20 points for the 8-1 Spartans.

Ashlynne Guenther led East (3-6) with 15 points.

North Branch 83, Hermantown 77

A 25-point game from Blake Schmitz and 22 from Keaton Christianson weren't enough for the Hawks (3-3) to overcome a 41-32 halftime deficit.
