Peterson was a lifelong Superior resident that has always been involved with Grandma’s Marathon since the beginning in 1977 as a member of the founding organization, the North Shore Striders. He was a member of the Board of Directors and a dedicated Grandma’s Marathon and Young Athletes Foundation volunteer, according to marathon officials. The Young Athletes Foundation created the KP Challenge, a series of three races, in his honor.
Peterson finished Grandma’s Marathon seven times; had a marathon best of 2 hours, 36 minutes in Miami in 1985 and ran a Las Vegas half-marathon in 1:10 at age 40 in 1999; and completed the Edmund Fitzgerald 100K race of 62.1 miles.
Peterson was a longtime activist in Superior who served on the City Council, appointed in 2000, and ran for mayor four times.
He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer not long after his final run for mayor in 2011, and he died from the disease in 2013.
Dan Conway, a former Superior High School coach, is this year’s Ron Daws Ambassador Award winner. Conway was a four-time Grandma’s Marathon master’s champion and holds two records for the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon. He was also a teacher, musician and a writer (“Carry on Regardless”).
In May 2018, Conway died from pancreatic cancer so the award will be presented to his family.
