The Superior High School boys soccer team wrapped up Lake Superior Conference Day on Saturday, Sept. 14, with a 2-1 double-overtime win over Duluth Marshall.

Jakob Kidd scored both of the Spartans’ goals. The sophomore tied the game at 1-1 in the 61st minute, then scored the game-winner three minutes into the second overtime.

The win improves the Spartans to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the LSC.

Masaki Hirata scored for Marshall in the 11th minute.

Nate Olson was the winning keeper for the Spartans, finishing with 19 saves. Charlie Eginton had 12 saves for Marshall.

Other scores in the LSC event, which was held at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex, were Cloquet-Esko-Carlton over Ashland, 7-1; Proctor blanking Mesabi East, 6-0; and Duluth Denfeld downing Hermantown. 3-2.

The Spartans play at Cloquet at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept 17; and host Grand Rapids at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19.

Volleyball

SHS defeated Duluth Denfeld 3-1 in Lake Superior Conference action Thursday, Sept. 12, in Duluth.

The Spartans and Hunters split the first two games, with Superior winning 25-15 and losing 25-22. The Spartans rebounded with wins of 25-11 and 25-8 to improve to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the LSC.

The Spartans were led by Zoie Cole, 19 set assists and 12 digs; Lexy Lohman, 22 digs and eight kills; and Abby Dolsen, 13 digs.

Denfeld was led by Hannah Thompson, 11 digs; Talyn Weidinger, six set assists and seven digs; Alli Ahlers, seven kills; and Sydney Larson, 17 set assists.

The Spartans, who played in the Hudson Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14, host Hermantown at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Cross-country

The Spartans ran in the 20th annual Eveleth Lions Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Eveleth Golf Course.

The SHS boys finished in fourth place and the girls fifth. Cloquet won both team titles.

The top finisher for the SHS boys was Shane Leask, 13th place in 19 minutes, 10.4 seconds. Cloquet’s Jordan Allen won the race in 17:06.2.

Savannah Leopold was the top Spartan girl, finishing in 20th place in 23:56.5. Hermantown’s Brita Birkeland won the race in 20:55.2.

Up next for Superior is the Rice Lake Invitational at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17.
