Orlandi to be honored at Huskies game

The Duluth Huskies will honor former Superior High School baseball coach Ron Orlandi during "Superior Day" June 22 at Wade Stadium. The event will be in conjunction with the Huskies game with the Thunder Bay Border Cats, which begins at 6:35 p.m....

The Duluth Huskies will honor former Superior High School baseball coach Ron Orlandi during “Superior Day” June 22 at Wade Stadium.

The event will be in conjunction with the Huskies game with the Thunder Bay Border Cats, which begins at 6:35 p.m. Gates open at 5:35 p.m.

Tickets for Superior residents are $4, and businesses participating in the event will be recognized throughout the game.

Orlandi was 88 when he died Feb. 15, 2017 in Las Vegas.

He was named the head baseball coach when the new Superior Senior High School opened in 1965 and remained the head coach until his retirement in 1988.

His coaching spanned 29 years, and his teams amassed a record of 327-127, winning six sectional tournaments and playing in six state tournaments.

Orlandi was inducted into the Superior/Douglas County Athletic Hall of Fame twice; in 2007 for accomplishments as a coach and again in 2014 recognizing the 1970 team in the Team Accomplishment Award, they went undefeated that year until the state tournament semifinal game.
