The Moose Lake Area Rebels doubled up the Superior High School girls hockey team 6-3 Tuesday night at the Superior Ice Arena.

The Rebels got two goals apiece from Jessica Bird and Jamie Benzie and one each from Sage Gerard and Sam Glerum to complete a season sweep of Superior and improve to 13-4-1 on the season.

The Rebels also defeated the Spartans 6-3 on Dec. 6.

The Spartans (7-9) got goals from Emma Peterson, Alee Milinkovich-Gray and Addie Young and 29 saves from Autumn Siers.

Gerard beat Siers with a back-hander 11:15 into the first period and the Rebels made it 2-0 when Jessica Bird scored off the ensuing face off.

Less than a minute later Superior tied the game up with goals six seconds apart.

Peterson got the Spartans within 2-1 when she beat Gamst from the point with assists from Sam Young and Addie Young.

The Spartans tied the game when Sam Young pushed the face off ahead to Milinkovich-Gray, who skated in alone and beat Gamst.

“The girls really showed good character,” SHS coach Kayla Chilstrom said. “Most teams fold when they get scored on twice in just seven seconds. But we didn’t and answered right back.”

The Rebels dominated the second period, outshooting Superior 15-4 and scoring three goals.

Gerard deflected an Abby Painovich shot by past Siers at 4:20; Jessica Bird scored unassisted on a power play at 6:39; and Benzie put home a rebound after a shot by Ruby Mohelsky.

Addie Young got Superior within 5-3 8:37 into the third period when she got behind the Rebel defense and put the puck over Gamst’s right shoulder 23 seconds into a Spartan power play.

“Eau Claire is one of the top teams in the state, so it will be a nice test for us,” Chilstrom said. “It’s also a section game, which means a lot when it comes to seeding for the playoffs.”

Eau Claire’s Abigail Stow currently leads the state in scoring with 31 goals and 19 assists for 50 points. Ava Kison is also in the top 10 with 22 goals and 12 assists for 34 points.

Superior’s Peterson is eighth in goals scored with 22. She also had 10 assists for 32 points.
