Superior High School athletes Sam Kline and CJ Fortune will host the “Let’s Dodge Hunger” dodgeball tournament at 7 tonight in the SHS gym.
These fine young men are raising money to be presented to Hunger Takes No Holiday, in care of the National Bank of Commerce, to assist in a three-way effort to help alleviate the number of homeless school kids in Superior who have no food.

The NOW (Nutrition on Weekend) Program currently helps provide food for almost 100 kids in Superior. Sam and CJ see the need and want to ask for your support and help.
As you may, or may not know, to graduate from SHS, each senior must participate in, and complete, a senior project. Hunger Takes No Holiday is honored to have been chosen to team with Sam and CJ with their project that will make a huge difference in so many young lives.
Each team consisting of five students or faculty (yes, even the old people are playing) pay a $20 entrance fee. The tournament is bracketed and the eventual champion is being awarded the coveted championship T-shirt. These shirts are being created and donated by Tina Prior of Shirts Unlimited.
Why did Sam and CJ choose this project? Spartan football coach Bob DeMeyer knows exactly why.
“Both young men have been staples in our youth program, they are always the first to step up to help someone and they are outstanding role models,” DeMeyer said. “They are the type of student-athletes that make everyone around them better. They are genuine, high character kids that are fun to be around while still working to get things done.
“The very first quality, or what we call ‘Marks of Excellence,’ we talk about is ‘love-sacrificing yourself to benefit others.’ These guys truly get this and exemplify it every day of their lives.”
When Sam, CJ and Lance met at Perkin’s for sweet rolls, which Lance bought, he was really impressed by the maturity and compassion of these two young men.
Both said, “Nobody should be without food. We are very fortunate to have great parents who provide what we need to be successful in school and in life. Not every kid is as lucky as we are. We want to do what we can to help other kids find the success and security that we have been blessed with.”

“Let’s Dodge Hunger” encourages all students and adults to be at the SHS gym at 7 p.m. to have lots of laughs, at the expense of the faculty. Meet your friends, make some new ones, and guess what, admission is free.
Cash donations may be made at the door to help Sam and CJ with their effort to help others. If you would like to help, you can send a contribution to Hunger Takes No Holiday, c/o Don Leighton, 10B Hayes Court, Superior, Wis., 54880.
Lance and Mrs. Lance are contributing $100 to these great kids. Won’t you contribute so Sam and CJ can help other kids?
