The Gitchee Gumme Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will be sponsoring a "Youth Learn to Hunt Turkeys" event in Douglas County. This year it will be held April 4-5 for area youths between 12 and 16 years old. A drawing will be held for 15 youths to attend the hunt.

The event pairs a first-time turkey hunters with experience mentors that teach them all there is to know about turkey hunting. The mentors are required by the Chapter to stay within touching distance of the youth, so they can coach at a whisper during the hunt.

Parents of youths that otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to turkey hunt are especially encouraged to apply. These youths would have first priority. Youth hunters must have passed hunter education to participate.

Applications for the hunt are available at the DNR offices in Superior and Brule, along with Superior Shooters Supply, Nummi Jewelers in Superior, Woods and Waters in Iron River and The Trading Post in Gordon. Superior Middle School also has forms in the main office.

Completed applications must be received by Feb. 20.
