Superior High School’s Mackenzie Kmecik celebrated “Senior Night” is a big way Thursday night as she scored a school record 39 points in the Spartans’ 88-63 loss to Grand Rapids.

Kmecik broke her own record of 38 points, which she shared with Alyssa Correll.

Kmecik set her previous mark earlier this season at Hermantown, while Correll scored 38 points against Grand Rapids in 2015.

Grand Rapids got scoring from 14 players, led by Heaven Hamling’s 27 points. Hannah Morris added 10.

The Spartans also got nine points from Ellie Leadstrom.

Superior plays at Esko at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday and at Duluth Denfeld at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The WIAA playoffs begin Feb. 26. Seedings will be released this weekend.

SPARTAN SPIN: Previous single-game scoring records at SHS included Jessica Lindstrom with 34 points at Duluth East during the 2012-13 season; and her aunt, Lisa (Lindstrom) Gotelaere, with 33 points in a win over Proctor on Feb. 19, 1981.
