Former Northwestern standout Abby Nelson, of Iron River, placed seventh at the NCAA Women's National College Wrestling Championships on Saturday, March 6, in Tiffin, Ohio, representing the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Wrestling in the 116-pound weight class, which featured 16 competitors, Nelson faced the No. 1-ranked wrestler, Felicity Taylor, of McKendree University (Illinois), in the first round. Nelson lost by a technical fall, 13-0, in the first period, but she bounced back in the second round with a 10-0 technical fall over Elizah Leonard (North Central College, Illinois).

She also won her third-round match by pinning Alina Kinsey of Schreiner College (Texas) in 1 minute, 35 seconds.

In the fourth round, Jaslyn Gallegos, of Presbyterian College (South Carolina), defeated Nelson with a technical fall, 10-0.

Nelson then pinned Anja Tschohl (Colorado Mesa College) in 2:58 to take seventh place and earn All-American honors — the first athlete from the Northwestern High School wrestling program to achieve that status.
