Iron River's Abby Nelson claims WIAC pole vault title

The Northwestern High School grad advances to the NCAA Championships.

Former Northwestern standout Abby Nelson, of Iron River, claimed her first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in the pole vault Friday, May 7, at the WIAC Championships in River Falls.

Nelson, a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, vaulted to a personal best height of 3.73 meters (12 feet, 2.75 inches) and qualified for the NCAA Championships, which begin May 27 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
