Former Northwestern standout Abby Nelson, of Iron River, advanced to the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships with two dominating victories Sunday, Feb. 21, at the Northwest Regional hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Nelson, a sophomore at Stevens Point, went 2-0 and won the 116-pound weight division. She pinned Iowa Wesleyan's Ashden Welty in just 36 seconds in the semifinals. In the final, Nelson claimed a 14-2 technical fall victory over Sarah Martinez of North Central.

Besides Nelson, five other Pointers advanced to nationals.

The Pointers will next compete at nationals in Tiffin, Ohio, on Saturday, March 6.

A day before wrestling, Nelson competed in a indoor track meet against UW-Platteville, posting UWSP's best mark of the year in the pole vault, winning with a height of 11-1.75. Her efforts over the weekend earned her athlete of the week honors for the Pointers.
