Huskies fall Loggers in extra innings

The Duluth Huskies' bats remained strong with 14 hits, but it wasn't enough as they lost to the La Crosse Loggers 11-10 in 10 innings Tuesday night before a Wade Stadium crowd of 1,202.

The Duluth Huskies’ bats remained strong with 14 hits, but it wasn’t enough as they lost to the La Crosse Loggers 11-10 in 10 innings Tuesday night before a Wade Stadium crowd of 1,202.

In a game that included six lead changes, the Huskies were outhit 16-14 and couldn’t take advantage of five Logger errors.

Despite the loss, the Huskies maintain in a tie with the Madison Mallards for the best overall record in the Northwoods League at 29-14 and remain in second place for the second half in the division at 5-2.

After La Crosse scored once in the first inning, Duluth took its first lead iwth a five-run third inning, which included an RBI single by Chris Gilbody, who would eventually score himself.

The Loggers fought back, scoring twice in the fourth inning and four more times in the fifth for a 7-5 lead.

Duluth answered again with a four-run seventh inning, which included a two-run fielder’s choice by Nick Sogard.

Trailing 10-9, the Huskies tied it up in the bottom of the ninth inning when Chris Gilbody drew a bases-loaded walk to score Sam Baier, who started the rally with a one-out single.
The Loggers won the game in the 10th inning when Harrison Freed’s one-out single plated Nick Lewis for an unearned run.

Baier finished with three hits, walked once and scored three runs. Augie Isaacson added two hits, two walks and a stolen base.

With the win, the Loggers moved 1 1/2 games up on the Huskies in the North Division. The same two teams meet again today at 6:35 p.m., with Andrew Stout taking a 4-0 record to the mound for the Huskies.
