The University of Wisconsin-Superior hockey teams enjoyed mixed success over the weekend with the Yellowjacket women sweeping Finlandia and the men losing a pair to UW-Stevens Point.

Women’s hockey

UWS defeated Finlandia 6-1 on Friday, Jan. 31, and 9-1 on Saturday, Feb. 1. Both games were played at Wessman Arena.

Kaleigh Martinson and Jenna Curtis each scored twice, Cassie McClure and Ashley Schintz both scored once and Maddy Gamst (seven saves) in Friday’s win.

Sarah Gundry had 54 saves and Brenna Ceglar scored for Finlandia (0-19).

Five players registered multiple points and Martinson and Amber Heidenreich each scored two goals in Saturday’s win.

Heidenreich added an assist for a three-point day while Jamie Davison and Ashley Schintz had three assists each. Kaylee Wood also had a goal and assist in the win.

The victory for the 'Jackets was their third straight and kept them undefeated in the all-time series with the Lions at 44-0.

UWS (12-5-1) hosts St. Scholastica at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, then hosts UW-River Falls at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8.

Men’s hockey

UWS dropped a pair of one-goal decisions to the Pointers, 6-5 in overtime Thursday, Jan. 30, at Wessman Arena, then 3-2 Saturday, Feb. 1, at Stevens Point.

Jordan Fader scored the Pointers’ game-winning goal 13 seconds into overtime on Thursday.

The Pointers went on a power play 15 seconds into OT when the Yellowjackets were called for running into the goaltender, and 17 seconds after that Fader’s game-winner came when his shot from the left side of the net went in just inside the right post.

Trailing 5-2, UWS exploded for three goals in the final 1:24 of the second period to tie the game 5-5.

Bates scored on a power play at 18:36, Dylan Johnson scored 21 seconds later, and Troy York scored short-handed with one second remaining.

UWS outshot UWSP 19-8 in a scoreless third period.

Myles Hektor and Nick Althaus combined to stop 22 shots for UWS (12-5-3, 5-5). Eli Billing made 32 saves for UWSP (11-6-3, 5-2-4).

On Saturday, UWS took a 2-1 lead on Dylan Johnson’s goal 8:22 into the third period, but the Pointers went on a five-minute power play and scored twice in the final 1:11 to win the game.

Zach Zech tied it up at 18:49 and Carter Roo scored the go-ahead goal with 16 seconds remaining.

UWS took a 1-0 lead on Autur Terchiyev’s power-play goal at 13:10 of the first period, but UWSP tied it up 26 seconds later on Ryan MacKellar’s goal.

With the loss, the Yellowjackets (12-6-3, 5-6 WIAC) are now winless in their last six games (0-4-2) and have fallen to third place in the WIAC.

UWS and UW-River Falls will Thursday, Feb. 6, in Superior and Saturday, Feb. 8, in River Falls. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m.
