The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team skated to a pair of 3-3 non-conference overtime ties over the weekend.
The Yellowjackets and Gustavus Adolphus skated to a draw Saturday, Jan. 18, at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter, Minn., and then with St. Thomas on Sunday, Jan. 19, at the St. Thomas Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn.
The two tie games leave the Yellowjackets with an overall record of 12-2-3 and still unbeaten in their last nine games with a 6-0-3 mark.
On Saturday night, Reid Brown scored the only goal of the opening period for the Gusties.
UWS took a 2-1 lead in the second period on Artur Terchiyev’s power-play goal and Conor MacLean’s fourth goal of the season.
The teams traded goals in the third period starting with Connor Clemons’ power-play goal for the Gusties.
Coltyn Bates gave UWS a 3-2 lead, but the Gusties tied it up and forced overtime on Caleb Anderson’s goal with 3:09 remaining in the third period.
Against the Tommies, UWS took another 3-2 lead in the third-period on goals by Bruno Birzitis and Liam Blais. But the Tommies tied things up on John Panvica’s second goal of the game with 50 seconds left in the third period.
Right after the announcer made the call that the third period was in its final minute, the Tommies pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker. Panvica had the puck in the left corner and threw it toward the net, where it deflected off a Yellowjacket defender and up and over Hektor’s shoulder to send the game to overtime.
UWS outshot St. Thomas 8-2 in overtime.
STU’s Spencer Zwiener and UWS’s Dylan Johnson scored first-period goals.
Hektor finished with 34 saves and Camden Burggrabe stopped 35 shots for the Tommies (8-6-2).
UWS returns to WIAC action with a two-game series at UW-Eau Claire on Friday, Jan. 24, and Saturday, Jan. 25. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m. and will be carried live on KUWS 91.3 FM.
’JACKET JOTTINGS: UWS’s Troy York extended his scoring streak to nine games with an assist in each game. … Oscar Svensson started in goal for UWS and had five saves when he suffered an injury and was replaced by Hektor, who finished with 16 saves.
