Jenna Byfuglien's goal at 16:44 of the second period was all the University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s hockey team needed in a 1-0 win over Bethel University Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Wessman Arena.

Kaleigh Martinson and Amanda Sergent assisted on Byfuglien's second goal of the season and McKenzie Whalen picked up her first collegiate shutout with 23 saves as the Yellowjackets improved to 9-2-1.

Baleigh Shuck had 17 saves for Bethel (4-9).

UWS and UW-Eau Claire play Thursday, Jan. 17, at Wessman Arena and Saturday, Jan. 19, at Hobbs Ice Center in Eau Claire.

The Blugolds are 12-2-1 on the season and defeated UWS 3-2 in overtime on Nov. 16, at Wessman Arena.

Former Superior Spartan Addie Young scored the game-winner for UWEC. Emma Peterson, also a former Spartan, also scored for the Blugolds.

Reinertsen honored

UWS’s Eva Reinertsen was honored with Team of the Week recognition.

Reinertsen, a senior from Duluth, led the Yellowjackets to UMAC wins last week over Crown College and Martin Luther College.

The defending regular season champions lead the UMAC with a 5-1 record and are 9-5 overall.

Reinertsen averaged 23 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks per game. She also shot 48% from the field, 30% from beyond the arc, and was 16-of-19 on free throws.

Her two double-doubles bring her season total to four.

UWS hosts Minnesota Morris at 4:45 p.m. Saturday.

More honors

Yellowjackets’ Vid Milenkovic and C.J. Pillath picked up weekly UMAC honors.

Milenkovic was named the men’s basketball player of the week. The senior from Zurich, Switzerland, led the Yellowjackets to two UMAC wins to improve to 6-0. In the wins, he recorded his fifth and sixth double-doubles of the season while averaging 15.5 points, 16 rebounds and three assists a game.

Pillath bested his NCAA Division III-leading mark in the weight throw with a fifth-place toss of 18.48 meters (60-7.75) at the Minnesota Open.

Pillath, a senior from Coleman, Wis., leads the UMAC by more than four meters in the event.

Men’s hoops

UWS won its first non-conference road victory in more than two seasons with a 116-70 win over the Finlandia Lions at Paavo Nurmi Center Wednesday, Jan. 15, in Hancock, Mich.

Eighteen Yellowjackets saw action and 14 of them scored points for UWS, which improves to 9-6 overall.

Allen Anderson led the way with 22 points and seven rebounds and Vid Milenkovic registered another double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Eli Vogel scored 14 points and Mason Ackley had nine points and seven boards.

Anderson was also 4-of-5 on 3-pointers for the Yellowjackerts, who made a season-high 14 from beyond the arc.

Dylan Underson led Finlandia (0-17) with 20 points, which included five 3-pointers.
