The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s hockey team extended its winning streak to five games with a pair of nonconference wins last weekend over St. Catherine.
Amanda Sergent and Kaleigh Martinson scored third period goals to break and deadlock and provide insurance as the Yellowjackets won 5-4 Saturday, Dec. 14, in St. Paul.
The Yellowjackets took a 2-0 lead in the first and Sergent's first goal of the game gave them a 3-1 lead in the second. St. Catherine rallied to tie with two goals in the first six minutes of the third period.
Martinson also scored twice and also had an assist and Amber Heidenreich scored the 'Jackets' other goal. Molly Shelton had two assists.
The series began with UWS winning 3-2 Friday, Dec. 13, at Wessman Arena.
After St. Catherine’s Sophia Gorski scored the only goal of the first period on a power play, Superior scored three straight beginning with Molly Shelton’s first goal of the season with 3:12 left in the second period.
Tessa Jorde scored with help CC Hayes at 8:20 of the third period, then Hayes scored herself with help from Jenna Byfuglien with 3:39 remaining.
St. Catherine pulled its goalie and made it a one-goal game when Laura Denchfield scored with 1:04 remaining.
McKenzie Whalen finished with 16 saves for Superior and Elizabeth Kubicek stopped 39 shots for St. Catherine.
The Yellowjackets (7-1-1) play next at Gustavus on Jan. 10.
