The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team swept a home-and-home WIAC series from Northland College this weekend, winning 4-2 at Ashland on Friday, Dec. 13, and 7-0 at Wessman Arena on Saturday, Dec. 14.
In Saturday’s win, Troy York scored two goals and Lawson McDonald, Andrew Dunham, Troy MacTavish, Pavel Mikhasenok and Dylan Johnson all scored once for the Yellowjacket, now 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the WIAC.
Jordan Martin and Liam Blais both had two assists and goalie Oscar Svensson stopped 22 shots in his second shutout of the season.
A pair of third-period goals by Chad Lopez lifted UWS to Frida's win at the Bay Area Civic Center in Ashland.
The Yellowjackets and Lumberjacks traded goals over the first two periods.
Artur Terchiyev’s power-play goal with an assist from York gave Superior a 1-0 lead with 2:29 left in the first period and Northland tied it up on Jackson Barrett’s goal 1:11 into the second.
The Yellowjackets successfully killed off a 5-minute major penalty early in the second period then took a 2-1 lead when Levi Cudmore scored on a rebound after a York shot, but the Lumberjacks tied it up again on Kurt Sonne’s short-handed goal with 6:10 left in the second period.
Lopez scored the eventual game-winner on a rebound 5:10 into the third period, then gave UWS some breathing room with assists from Bruno Birzitis and Lawson McDonald with 9:40 remaining.
Myles Hektor finished with 26 saves for Superior and Gennaro Anzevino had 50 saves for Northland.
The Yellowjackets are off until hosting the Superior Showdown Dec. 28-29 at Wessman Arena.
