The Superior High School boys hockey team opened its season with a pair of losses in the 2019 Bryant Heating and Cooling Meltdown this weekend at Hobb Ice Arena in Eau Claire.
The Spartans lost 7-0 to Green Bay Notre Dame on Friday, Nov. 29, then fell to the host Eau Claire Memorial Old Abes 4-3 on Saturday, Nov. 30.
A power outage during Friday’s opening game between the ECM and Wausau West delayed the start of Superior’s game for two hours. It was scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
When play finally got going the Tritons showed they had plenty of scoring power by sandwiching two goals in the first and third periods around a three-goal second period.
Bo Buckley had 14 saves for GBND and Jamin Durfee stopped 47 shots for Superior.
The Old Abes built a 4-0 lead over the Spartans in the third-place game. The first two goals were short-handed by Joe Kelly.
Gunnar Hansen, with assists from Drew Scharte, got the Spartans within 4-2 late in the second period, and Kaden Olson, with an assist from TJ Sitek, completed the scoring midway through the third period.
Durfee had 31 saves for Superior and Kyler Strenke stopped 15 shots for ECM.
Superior hosts Duluth Marshall on Tuesday, Dec. 3, and plays at Silver Bay on Thursday, Dec. 5. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
The Spartans wrap up the week at Hudson at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.
