The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey team improved to 5-1 with a weekend sweep of the Chatham Cougars Nov. 29-30 at Frozen Pond Arena in Valencia, Pa.
The Yellowjackets blew open a close game with four third-period goals in a 5-1 win Friday, Nov. 29, then completed the sweep with a 3-1 win Saturday, Nov. 30.
With the wins, the Yellowjackets improve to 5-1 for the first time since 2012-13.
Friday’s game was tied 1-1 after one period thanks to goals by Superior’s Liam Blais, off a Chatham defenseman, and Chatham’s Noah Midalsy, on a rebound.
After a scoreless second period, Jon Pace’s first collegiate goal proved to be the game-winner on a power play 46 seconds into the third period.
Troy York scored back-to-back and Coltyn Bates sealed the victory with an empty-netter with 1:15 remaining.
Myles Hektor finished with 21 saves for UWS (4-1), while Richardo Gonzales stopped 46 shots for Chatham (1-8).
Bruno Birzitis and Andrew Durham scored first-period goals for UWS on Saturday.
Niko Moulakelis cut Superior’s lead in half 8:07 into the second period, but the Yellowjackets regained a two-goal edge with Levi Cudmore’s goal at 14:26.
Oscar Svensson had 29 saves in the win in goal for UWS. Gonzalez had 33 saves for the Chatham.
UWS returns to WIAC action with games at UW-River Falls on Friday, Dec. 6, and at UW-Stout on Saturday, Dec. 7. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m.
